The Hollywood Reporter and other sources have reported that Sony Pictures is developing a Sonic the Hedgehog feature film!
Of course, no plot details and little other information have yet been revealed; however, now that the film has officially been announced, I suppose I could show you guys some ideas I had regarding potential Sonic films. It was nice to hear that the official film would be a hybrid CGI/live-action production, which is exactly what I would have done.
One very early idea (which, oddly enough, was used in the 1996 OVA which became a direct-to-video "movie" for the U.S. market) involved the President being kidnapped, which I discarded soon after I came up with it for a plethora of reasons. I then envisioned a prologue in which the Master Emerald was—yet again—destroyed and it soon led to Sonic waking up in his adopted hometown of San Francisco, or a fictitious district therein called "Knothole" (the city is also the headquarters for Sega's North American operations; "Knothole" is an obvious Archie Comics reference though I know virtually nothing about that separate universe). Two ongoing characters in these drafts were Michael Wharf of the Central Intelligence Agency and his partner David Robertson, who in later revisions was said to be working for the Guardian Unit of Nations (G.U.N.) which works out of Alcatraz Island in San Francisco. CIA and G.U.N. are shown to have some sort of a rivalry and it's thought that putting two opposing agents together could solve the problem. That's right, it's a public-private semi-secret federal law enforcement version of the buddy cop genre combined with the kind of action/adventure/comedy/sci-fi elements generally found in the Sonic series. In short, not a good idea for a friggin' movie.
Oh, it gets better: Wharf and David end up on the same kind of mission Sonic is on, and when they first encounter Sonic, Wharf is obviously very suspicious of him and they have their own rivalry. But then Sonic saves Wharf's life and everything's all good and they work together, and yadda yadda yadda.
My best idea out of all this, in fact, was regarding the musical score: Sonic's leitmotif (theme) throughout would be the Masato Nakamura-penned title theme from the classic video games. I'd at least like to see that in the official product.
The "fake working titles" for this would have been SILVER SCREEN ZONE and AREA 91.
P.S. DON'T SCREW IT UP, GUYS…

Request boost
I'm sure a few of you out there are looking for this kind of thing, but just found an artist whose style I like and they're looking for requests so if you're interested, go check them out! Have fun!
For the record
I will remain on DeviantArt but have been limiting my activities here for reasons 100% unrelated to Eclipse (as I was an early adopter of the new look in order to test-drive it; I am surprised it took this long for it to fully replace Classic, and while it's overall not bad I feel like it is not close to ready for primetime and I can see how it has alienated many longtime deviants). Mainly, the time needed to maintain a public art feed on a regular basis is time I do not have. If you are partaking in the mass exodus from DA, you may also watch me on FurAffinity or follow me on Twitter @mattderojas @BraveworldEnt @NextGenimation or Gab @mattderojas (none of which are related exclusively to art).
The Lover of Me LIVESTREAM
As I've previously mentioned in the description of the stream art above, a livestream for the Sonic fan game THE LOVER OF ME will be going live TODAY starting at 12:00pm ET. Please join us for what should be quite a fascinating experience! https://youtu.be/XBDau73jd8o
2018 Art Year in Review
It's been quite a year for me on the art/creative front, and in some ways a personally game-changing one for me as well. Here, then, is an overview of where I've been in 2018...
I started the year with an unusual request for a fan character which I fulfilled and which turned out better than I expected. This was followed up with an outfit swap art trade—and I gotta say, it certainly proves that she can rock just about anything and still look amazing in it.
By late February, I had obtained an iPad Pro and made an alternate-universe request the first thing I drew on it. You can tell I was still getting used to drawing on a tablet, but on
